Curtin University, is a public university based in Perth, Austrália Ocidental, named after the 14th Prime Minister of Australia, John Curtin. It is the largest university in Western Australia, with over 40,000 alunos (as of 2012). It has campuses in Sydney, Cingapura, and Sarawak. Being a leading global institution, it has forged close ties with 90 exchange universities in more than 20 países. The University comprises five main faculties with over 95 specialists centres.

Curtin’s Chemical Engineering program ranks amongst the best 100 in the world in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings in 2011. Curtin’s Graduate School of Business’s MBA programmes, which are accredited by the London-based Association of MBAs (AMBA), were ranked 58th out of 113 amongst renowned business schools worldwide by the Economist magazine.

Curtin has become increasingly active in research and partnerships overseas, particularly in mainland China. It is involved in a number of business, management, and research projects, particularly in supercomputing, where the university participates in a tri-continental array with nodes in Perth, Beijing, and Edinburgh.
Edith Cowan University, is situated in Perth, with approximately 20,000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, aproximadamente 4000 of whom are international students originating from over 90 countries outside Australia. Murdoch University, located in Perth, is a research intensive institution and a member of Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRU Australia). Murdoch University is home to over 18,500 students including 3,000 international students from over 100 países. The University partners with other educational institutions, such as KDU University College in Malaysia, to provide university degrees to off-shore students. University of Notre Dame Australia, is a private Roman Catholic university established in 1989 in the Western Australian port city of Fremantle. Although it is a private university, Notre Dame receives significant government funding. While The University of Notre Dame Australia has “strong collegial links” with the American University of Notre Dame located in Notre Dame, Indiana, they are separate institutions.The University has campuses in Fremantle, Austrália Ocidental, Broome, Western Australia and in two locations in Sydney, Nova Gales do Sul. The Fremantle and Broome campuses form Western Australia’s smallest university, with just over 7000 students enrolled in 2008.
University of Western Australia, is the oldest university in the state of Western Australia and the only university in the state to be a member of the Group of Eight, as well as the sandstone universities. One of Australia’s best and most prestigious universities, UWA is highly ranked internationally in various publications; o 2011 QS World University Rankings^] placed UWA at 79th internationally. To date, UWA has produced 99 Rhodes Scholars and a Nobel Prize winner. ^]UWA recently joined the Matariki Network of Universities as the youngest member, the only one established during the 20th century.

UWA’s student body is generally dominated by school-leavers from within Western Australia, mostly from the Perth metropolitan area. There are comparatively smaller numbers of older students. In recent years, numbers of full-fee paying foreign students, predominantly from Southeast Asia, have grown as a proportion of the student population. UWA has formal agreements with 44 international institutions, promoting staff and student exchanges, collaborative research and exchange of teaching materials and methods. The Western Australian economy is largely dominated by the mining and resources sector, with iron-ore, gold, liquefied natural gas, diamonds and agricultural commodities such as wheat being exported all over the world due to the resource-rich land the State offers.

Agriculture is also a significant industry sector within the Western Australian economy. The State produces wheat, barley, other grains, wool, lamb and beef for the national economy of Australia, as well as the international export market. With major wine-producing areas within Western Australia, many wineries produce wine for local, national and international consumption. Fishing is also notably significant for the local and international export market, with the main types of aquaculture being western rock lobsters, prawns, crabs, shark and tuna.

Manufacturing is also a main contributor to the State’s economy. Manufacturing of mined resources is a huge proportion of this industry, such as engineering of the metals mined, ship building and petrol and diesel produced from the oil refineries found off the coast. Food manufacturing and processing from the agricultural industries is also a large component of the economy.

Tourism and education have grown significantly during the past few years, with more international tourists visiting Western Australia, and students choosing to study here. Towns with smaller populations have benefitted from this increase, as the generated income increases the prosperity of the region.

In terms of quality of life comparative to the cost of living, Perth offers a very comfortable lifestyle, often ranking as one of the most liveable places in the world. However the city and indeed the state has become rather expensive over the last few years as a result of the mining boom.

Renting

Availability of rental properties tends to be seasonal with the highest demand for rental properties being in the summer months of November through to March. On average, around half of the available properties are usually rented out within two weeks of being advertised. Properties are advertised usually in local and Statewide newspapers and online at sites such as realestate.com.au, Domain ou REIWA.

There is a wide range of rental options available in Perth – from basic units to luxury mansions, short or long term and furnished or unfurnished.

There are so many choices of where to live in Perth, close proximity to the city, river and beaches or within the ranges of the Perth Hills. Some of the main towns within the metropolitan area are detailed below.

Perth city centre

For those looking for an inner city lifestyle, suburbs that you may like to look into include; Perth (city), East Perth, Subiaco, Northbridge, West Perth, Shenton Park, North Perth and South Perth. You’ll find a lot of apartment style accommodation in the city, river views, and moving further out towards the coastline, luxury high priced homes. Mount Lawley, Leederville and Mount Hawthorn in the north-eastern suburbs feature many restored character homes and a funky lively cafe lifestyle strip along Beaufort Street, Oxford Street and Scarborough Beach Road, respectively.

Many people who live in these areas walk to work or use public transport. Entertainment and dining out is also within walking distance with sports facilities and parks never far away. Perth city has a central business district in the heart of the city including major banks and offices of many large businesses with pubs, clubs and restaurants in the entertainment district of Northbridge .

Northern suburbs

Also referred to in Perth as ‘north of the river’, north of the metropolitan area has a large residential capacity with coastal and surrounding suburbs. House prices generally increase the closer you are to the beach. Suburbs close to the beach include City Beach, Trigg, Hillarys and Mindarie. Homes right on the beach front are often larger houses, with a couple of storeys and are priced at the high end of the market. Areas such as Joondalup and Ellenbrook are large towns with extensive amenities.

The rail line from Perth city and southern suburbs, extends to the northern suburb of Clarkson with plans for further extension over the coming years. Many people use the train to commute into the city during the week and for leisure and entertainment on the weekends.

Southern suburbs

Also known as ‘south of the river’ south of the Swan River are the southern suburbs, which offer very comfortable family orientated housing. Suburbs in this area include Applecross, Attadale, Bicton, Bull Creek, Mount Pleasant, Murdoch and Willetton. These suburbs offer an established suburban lifestyle with many of the roads and avenues being lined with leafy trees and established plants. Many of the houses are traditional looking homes with outdoor wrap around veranda’s to enjoy the many hours of sunshine we have.

Fremantle (also known locally as ‘Freo’) is based south east of Perth city and is the State’s busiest working port. Fremantle contains a mix of traditional working class homes, trendy renovated cottages, apartment blocks and expensive new inner city style housing. The variety of culture is ever present in Fremantle with organic growers markets and weekly craft markets which draw the interest of tourists and locals each week.

January can be scorching hot in Perth so a great idea is to head ‘down south’ as the locals say. Margaret River is famous for its wine region, surf beaches (and unfortunately some sharks ) but it is well worth the trip. Dunsborough and Yallingup are nice places to visit or spend a few lazy days.

Summer Trips (November to March)

In the summer months you should either stay in Fremantle and catch the afternoon sea-breeze or head down to Margaret River, Dunsborough and Yallingup (3 hrs from Perth) or further down to Denmark and Albany (5 hours).

For the real adventurers you can head to the wonderful beaches of Esperance (7 hours) on the edge of the Great Australian Bite and maybe even continue all the way to Adelaide (2 days).

Winter (April to October)

A great trip to do in Winter would be a drive up the west coast from Perth to Exmouth. Stop off at Dongara (The Priory is a great place to stay (http://www.prioryhotel.com.au), Kalbarri, Monkey Mia and Coral Bay.

From Monkey Bay all the way to Exmouth lies the World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef – home of the whale shark and another 499 species of fish. You can also find surf and kite surfing beaches along the entire west coast.

Perth metropolitan area

Perth has more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia.
